Umhlali is located inland about 50 Kilometres from Durban. Umhalali means “Monkey Orange Tree”, named after a tree that use to grown close to the riverbanks of the Umhlali River. The monkeys use to feast off of the fruit on these trees and due to this it got its name. Another meaning of the name is “place of waiting” as the settlers and locals had to wait along the banks when they wanted to travel north.

The town is a lovely town to visit for history lovers; you can visit the Umhlali Museum, which showcases an old locomotive, which was originally used for transporting sugarcane to the mill.
The Sugar Mill offers tours, which will give you a first hand experience of how they crush sugarcane and after that you can explore the shops where you can buy a few local products.
Golf lovers can go play golf at the Umhlali Golf course, which is located in a tropical oasis. Peter Matkovich designed this eighteen-hole golf course, which is a challenging test for golf players.
